He made his name with a strong, slow build, quietly introducing his music to anyone willing to listen. Daniel Norgren is an otherworldly talent with an old soul. Daniel Norgren illuminates the cracks and details of the Americana lineage we so often overlook. Our blind spots are too large, our notions too preconceived. In this regard, he reminds one of Sergio Leone, not in his filmic style, but in the way he spins American music unlike anyone born in the USA ever could.

His enterprise is a fully realized universe: Norgren makes his own videos, filming the world around him to match his aesthetic. But Norgren’s interests lie in more than music.

Daniel’s records are supremely unique takes on the American tradition, evoking a rust-worn blues feel that pervades his sound. But for the uninitiated, before the music speaks louder than these words ever could, here’s his story: The Swedish born musician began releasing albums on his own Superpuma Records in 2007, running the imprint with his producer, Pelle Nyhage, and his wife, Petra Wester-Norgren. It’s music that moves the body as much as the soul, grounded and etherial.ĭaniel Norgren shouldn’t need an introduction. Since then, his versatility and multi-instrumentalist approach has led to him working on several number one albums as well as developing some exciting projects. After graduating from LIPA in 2012, Phil quickly found his way onto working on several A-list projects including Little Mix and Birdy. Norgren regularly commands legions of European concertgoers with his entrancingly sublime slow-burn of blues noir and soulful folk washed in a transcendental quietude molded by the forests and lakes of his hometown just outside of Borås, Sweden. Phil Cook is a London based music producer/songwriter whose recent credits include artists such as Lewis Capaldi, Liam Payne, Ellie Goulding, Jess Glynne, and Paloma Faith. Lucius, Marcus Mumford, Courtney Marie Anders, Phil Cook, Natalie Merchant, Adia Victoria, and more joined in for a few numbers in the set.Daniel Norgren, acclaimed Swedish avant-folk singer-songwriter, will play at the Tractor Tavern on August 7 and 8 with guest Phil Cook. Simon wasn’t the only special guest in Rateliff’s revue.

“Thank you, Paul, for your songs, your voice, and your presence.” “It’s hard to put into words the joy we felt bringing the great American songwriter Paul Simon to the Newport Folk stage,” Rateliff added. “The atmosphere at the festival was nothing short of wonderful.” “What a joy working with Nathaniel and his incredible band,” Simon said. Simon took his bows and then closed out the set with a solo performance of “The Sound of Silence.” Rateliff and his band, the Night Sweats, dedicated their entire show to Simon as they covered a suite of his songs before Simon himself came out to sing “Graceland,” “American Tune,” “The Boxer” and “The Sound of Silence.”Īccompanied by the Night Sweats as well as Jerry Douglas on guitar, the 80-year-old icon kicked off his performance with “Graceland” before handing off the microphone to Rhiannon Giddens for an updated version of “American Tune.”Īs they moved on to “The Boxer,” a whole host of friends and fellow musicians joined Simon on stage, including Lukas Nelson (whom Simon described as “an old family friend”). Paul Simon made a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, joining Nathaniel Rateliff’s “American Tune Revue” set on Saturday afternoon (July 23).
