Tenkara rods are telescopic fly rods which are based on a traditional Japanese method of fishing using only a rod, line and fly. Switch rods, a cross of the two styles, are typically 10 to 12 feet long and feature a handle just large enough for two-handed casts as needed. Early spey rods were 22 feet long, but modern spey rods are typically only 12 to 15 feet and available in two, three, and four-piece models. Fly rods are available from 5 to 11 feet in length and in one to eight-piece models for ease of storage and travel. Fly rods are often associated with trout fishing but have been used by anglers for everything from panfish, bass, pike, and musky in freshwater, to bonefish, permit, tarpon, and sharks in saltwater. Fly fishing rods are single-handed rods used for a great number of species and water conditions, while spey & switch rods are two-handed fly rods for salmon and steelhead in large rivers. Lamiglas honey e-glass blanks remain full-flexing and slow action demanding a very relaxed stroke. Some, you cannot buy as a finished rod from the big manufacturers, or cannot get them with custom changes.
These are tried and true off-the-shelf blanks supplied to rod builders. This year I am offering s-glass models by Livingston: Western Glass in 8’6,” line weights 5, and 6 YS Glass in 9,' #3 line weight. My e-glass builds include blanks from such manufacturers as Lamiglas, Batson SPG small stream glass, Jenkins PLG, and “Klassic” small stream glass. Two types of glass are now available: the slow-to-medium action e-glass, and the newly derived, and slightly faster, s-glass. There always remained a few manufacturers who continued to make fiberglass rod blanks (mostly small companies), and as they increased sales to rod builders, other manufacturers reintroduced fiberglass as well. The flexibility of fiberglass also protects delicate tippets and improves hook-ups with fewer lost fish. These anglers realize that fiberglass provides better line control, and delicacy of presentation. The resurgence in fiberglass fly rods is a direct result of many anglers rejecting the whiplash action of graphite for the smoother casting feedback action of fiberglass rods.
